Assumptions in Consciousness Science: Are We Really Unconscious in ‘Unconscious’ States?

Abstract and talk at the Nordic Graduate Conference on the Philosophy of Mind (2021). Presented empirical and conceptual arguments challenging the assumption that canonical “unconscious” states — anaesthesia, dreamless sleep, unresponsive wakefulness — are fully devoid of conscious experience. Discussed implications for both the methodology of consciousness science and the philosophy of mind.
